Upon turning 16, you can take the first steps towards obtaining your motorcycle driver’s licence. (If you’re a minor, you’ll need your parents’ consent.)
There are three types of motorcycle licences, depending on the type of motorcycle you plan on riding:
- Class 6A (all motorcycles)
- Class 6B (motorcycles with 400 cc or less)
- Class 6C (motorcycles with 125 cc or less)
First step
The first step in learning how to drive a motorcycle is successfully completing your SAAQ theoretical exam (at a SAAQ branch) and obtaining a 6R learner’s licence. Note that you can begin your first 3-hour theoretical course before passing a knowledge test at a SAAQ branch, but you won’t be able to begin the practical test, on a closed-circuit track, until you obtain your 6R learner’s licence.
Second step
Complete the first part of the theoretical training to prepare for the SAAQ practical closed-circuit motorcycle test.
- 3 hours of classroom theory
- 16 hours of closed-circuit practice
Third step
After completing the second step, you must follow another theoretical training course prior to driving on the highway.
- 3 hours of classroom theory
- 10 hours of highway/road practice
Once you receive your certificate of course completion, you can complete your driver’s training on a closed circuit track (at a SAAQ service outlet) and obtain your 6A learner’s licence.
At this point, you will be allowed to drive without an accompanying rider for a minimum of 11 months, after which you must pass your final road test to obtain your motorcycle licence.
